Finally sharing the best homemade playdough recipe that we’ve been making! I’ve tried a lot of playdough recipes – some have too much oil and are too greasy, others dry out too quick – and I always come back to this simple one. Like me, I’m sure you always have all the ingredients in your pantry, too!
Homemade playdough is great because you can make a huge batch in 10 minutes that will last you months and it’s free from chemicals. Also – super cheap!
Here’s what you need:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup salt
- 4 tsp cream of tartar
- 2 cups water
- 2 tbs of vegetable oil
- Essential oils or food coloring if desired
And to make the homemade playdough:
Combine all ingredients into a sauce pan and stir together over low heat. Stir constantly until a dough begins to form and pulls away from the edges of the pan. It doesn’t take long! If you’re using food coloring and essential oils add a few drops of each before you remove from heat. If you’re making more than one color with your playdough then wait to add the food coloring. Remove from pan and place on the counter to cool. Gently knead and pull of sections to add food coloring too. I like to mix them in zip lock baggies to avoid getting food coloring on your hands! Store in a zip lock bag for up to 2 months!
I spent a considerable amount of nap time last week making every color of the rainbow to photograph for this post and piled them all up into small containers from Michael’s which make a really sweet St.Patrick’s Day treat for little ones! You can sprinkle glitter on top, too!
Does the food coloring get on your kiddo’s hands when they play with it? Or once the food coloring is mixed in it is pretty set?
Does it leave oily marks when the kids play with it?
No
Would love to know which brand of food colouring you used! Tha colours are beautiful pastels 😍 thanks for sharing!
