Motherhood According To Lindsey of Troubadour Clothing

Today marks the entry into my 3rd trimester of pregnancy and I really have a hard time wrapping my head around this. To be honest I feel totally unprepared still and to think I only have 12 weeks to get my life in order so we bring our babe home to a peaceful and calm home (and equally as calm, organized parents!) scares me. It prompted me to start a new series where I talk with inspiring moms about how they manage to do it all and hopefully pick up some good tips and advice! First up is fashion designer Lindsey Carter of Troubadour Clothing! Lindsey not only runs a successful business but is the mama to twins!

Motherhood According To Lindsey Carter

You were pregnant with twins!! Do you have any tips, tricks or advice that helped get you through your pregnancy?
LC: Going to bed early! And making sure I kept a positive attitude. I was high risk and put on bed rest at 22 weeks with the twins, so making sure that I listened to my body, stayed calm and positive was a focus of mine.

What were your favorite products to use while pregnant?
LC: I loved using all of the TaTa Farper facial products – because they are all natural and safe to use while pregnant. For my belly – I used Noodle & Boo Elasticity Oil and Clarins Huile “Tonic” which is made from 100% pure plant extracts. I only ended up with a couple stretch marks, and my belly was so entirely huge towards the end!

What websites, blogs, books or apps do you like to read/use about motherhood or kid/baby?
LC: I was addicted to the Babycenter app “My Pregnancy Today”. It gives you updates every day on how your little one is growing and the new things that are going on in your body too. It sends a daily message to you, and is customized to your baby’s gender and due date.

Favorite places to shop for kid & baby?
LC: Its endless really! Online I shop at Progeny Shoppe, Shannon & Toad and J Crew baby. My favorite baby brands for clothes are mini rodini, Bobo Choses, Stella Mccartney kids, for sunglasses Babiators are the best, and Bumby from Marysia for swimsuits. I also love How to Kiss a Frog for girly dresses, and Paul Smith junior for cool boys clothes. For night time, Serena and Lily zip-up baby sleepers are a must!

What’s the best piece of advice you can think of for a new mother?
LC: That you WILL sleep again, and to understand that there are gonna be highs (baby’s first smile at you!) along with the lows (the sleep deprivation) but that every day will be fulfilling in its own way. And the fact that you have brought this (or these!) beautiful beings into your life really is a miracle and to soak it up because they grow up fast! I know that may be trite to say, but know those hard moments won’t last, and revel in the awesomeness.

How do you juggle motherhood, your successful business and your marriage?
LC: I am not ashamed to say I have help! We have a nanny (found her through Sittercity.com) and she is an infant montessori teacher. I also have help at work and my husband is very supportive of the business as well. Since my business is seasonal, work in the winter months can be brutal, working late after the kids have gone down, but in the summer when its lighter I will take Fridays off to be with them and have a 3 day weekend. I make sure to always be home by 4:30pm and am with until they go to bed. If I’m not done with work by 430, will pick up work again after they go to sleep to get it done. And I’m always the first to see their smiles in the morning.

What aspect of motherhood made you most nervous?
LC: I think I was most worried about being a good mom. I was so worried that I wouldn’t be able to provide the loving nurture and care when my children were crying or upset, and worried I wouldn’t have enough patience with them when I didn’t know what was wrong. It was a wonderful surprise to discover I had a deep well of patience and love and was able to pull from that whenever I needed it.  After the first six months, it was then that I turned around and was like, why did I ever doubt myself? I also think that is an important lesson to new mothers, that when the time arrives you DO have it. All of us do.

How do you treat yourself and relax?
LC: I’m still learning how to do that one! If you figure it out please share with me :)

As a clothing designer, do you have 3 tips for staying stylish while pregnant?
LC: 1) My daily work OOTD consisted of lot of day dresses with Vans slip ons in a metallic gold or a washed out neon pink. Pair comfortable dresses with fun shoes!
2) Invest in a tight black knit LBD and show off your bump!
3) I had a hard time finding maternity tops I liked, so instead of buying maternity, just bought the same designers I normally shopped, but bought bigger sizes.
