Books I Read This Month: January

I’m excited to kick off another new series this year – sharing a recap of the books I read every month. Last year I really got back into reading more frequently and it’s made such a positive impact on my evening routine. Here are the books I finished in January.

City Of Girls: I actually finished this one on New Year’s Eve, but I’m including it anyway because I loved it so much! It took me a while to get sucked into this one but I’m really glad I stuck with it. It was my first time reading a book by Elizabeth Gilbert (I know, I know) but I really love her writing style and how she fully develops every character in the book. The majority of this love story takes place in New York City in the 1940s. It chronicles a young woman coming of age and discovering herself as she is sent off to live with her Aunt who owns a wild theatre company in the city. Stick with it!

Wild Game: My Mother, Her Lover and Me: I read this one in a few days! It’s a memoir that broke my heart in so many ways – sharing the story of a young girl who is forced to carry the secret of her mother’s affair, the affect it took on her and how it shaped her life. If you like memoir’s with juicy family drama I highly suggest this one, I almost couldn’t believe parts of it were real!

Inheritance: Coming off Wild Game I dove head first into another memoir, again about family. This memoir tells the powerful story of a middle-aged woman’s quest to figure out her self-identity after discovering in her 40’s that her dad was not her biological father. It is wonderfully written and shares such powerful messages about family, I read this one quickly too, though the second half was a little slower it was still worth every page!

This Is How It Always Is : My favorite of the bunch and the best book I’ve read in a really long time. I don’t really know where to begin but this was the most thought provoking, emotional roller coaster and I loved every page! A must read for any parent. This novel chronicles the marriage (and family) of two parents keeping a secret for their child – their little boy decides he wants to be a girl at a young age and the complex road they walk down for their family will leave you in awe.
