As a follow up to last year’s popular sunscreen post I’m sharing our best bets for natural sunscreen this year with a few new additions so the mix. If you aren’t familiar with the EWG Skin Deep website I highly suggest checking it out – not only does it rate thousands of beauty products on a scale of 1-5 (with 1 being the lowest potential health risk and 5 the highest) but you can also look up individual ingredients if you can’t find the product you are looking for. This is my trusted resource for anything I put on the girls and I often look up beauty products for myself too — and of course household stuff as well. You’ll be shocked at how toxic so many things are that are marketed as being ‘clean’ or ‘safe’ ! It’s been hard to find a sunscreen that applies easily, actually protects against the sun and isn’t loaded with toxic chemicals. Here are a few favorites.
Badger Baby: Comes highly suggested by tons of moms I polled and is water resistant.
Kiss My Face Kids Mineral Sunscreen : One of the best rated for least harmful chemicals, though some say it is slightly greasy.
Baby COOLA Sunscreen: Unscented for babies and kids that may have sensitive skin, it’s on the pricier side and can be thick to apply but it’s a well known and reputable brand and also has great options for adults.
BeautyCounter Stick Sunscreen: Aside from Badger, BeautyCounter sunscreen came with many recommendations from other mamas. It also has a great low EWG rating and the stick formula is popular for ease of application.
Goddess Garden Organics Natural Sunscreen: This product is also free from synthetic fragrances, is water resistant for 80 minutes and is free of toxic chemicals. Some reviewers express difficulty with the spray bottle formula not spraying properly, so I’d stick with the cream formula.
Think Baby Stick + Think Baby Cream: We used Think Baby last year and are using it again this year since it kept Piper burn-free all summer. It also applies very easily which is a huge plus.
Blue Lizard Baby Sunscreen: Moms and kids alike love how this sunscreen bottle turns hot pink from white when exposed to UV rays, a great reminder to apply sunscreen! Also has a low EWG score, reviewers mention it is thick but a little goes a long way.
Bare Republic Mineral Baby Sunscreen: New on the scene – (and sold at Target) Bare has a great EWG score. It appears to be sold out right now but hopefully will be stocked again soon!
Babyganics Mineral Stick: We have and love this. Oddly it rates lowest on the EWG scale compared to the other Babyganics Sunscreens which have a much higher rating.
Think baby is also our go to. After trying others on this list, I found them to be much harder to apply and messy! I will have to order the stick for easier face applicatio !
I’ve been using Babyganics stick and cream, and it’s effective, but makes my daughter look like a ghost even when I spend a lot of time rubbing it in. The zinc also gets all over clothes. Are there any baby-safe sunscreens that absorb quickly without the white pallor that you’d recommend? How does think baby do on that scale??
