Now that I’m more than halfway through my pregnancy I’ve finally started to work on our baby girl’s nursery! I’m a little overwhelmed with everything we need to purchase, so I’ve been looking at Walmart for affordable options that are still stylish and fit within the vibe I’m going for. Honestly, I’ve been so surprised with everything I’ve been able to find and had no idea the Walmart baby and nursery departments offered such amazing brands (Babyletto, Baby Bjorn etc.) that are my aesthetic! Now that I’ve already designed and shopped for one nursery, I have a better sense of the essentials we need for this new space, what we can do without and items I’m going to be sure to purchase this time. I’m excited to share my full guide to everything you need to purchase for your nursery below!

Nursery Essentials

Crib: There are so many options available at Walmart, it’s really just a matter of personal preference — they cary so many brands and styles. I love the Babyletto Hudson (almost got it for Piper) and this super simple design (likely what I’ll get for baby #2).

Crib Mattress: Your baby will spend a lot of time in the crib so pick out a mattress wisely! I love this Sealy mattress that has one side designed for a baby and the other for a toddler so it grows with your child, it also has an organic cover.

Crib Sheets: I suggest having at least 2-3 crib sheets for when you’re doing laundry. Between spit up and diaper leaks it seems like you’ll always have one in the wash.

Bassinet: Most parents choose to use a bassinet the first few months in their room. We love our Halo and will be using it with baby #2, this Baby Bjorn bassinet is also top rated and loved by many moms. I also have this moses basket for naps that you can easily bring from room to room.

Rocking Chair: We had a bad experience with our first rocker, it shifted every time you rocked and made it impossible to actually use. We are still not sure if it was the carpet, wooden base of the rocker or a combination but we quickly replaced it. For our next baby we are very adamant about using a rocker that’s easy to use since we’ll be spending a lot of time in it! I love this modern version and a more traditional upholstered option and this bentwood one has my heart!

Bookshelf: You definietly want a place for all your baby toys, books and keepsakes. I’ve had my eye on this Babyletto bookcase for a while, I love the fun design!

Changing Table: You can get a normal dresser that will grow with your child or a table designed specifically for diaper changes, like this. My preference is the dressers that come with a removable changing table that you can simply take off when your child outgrows them. You’ll also need a changing pad and several changing pad covers. We only have 1 for Piper and her changing pad is perpetually without a cover on because we have to wash it so frequently. I suggest having 2-3 covers!

Area Rug: Carpet or not, an area rug is an easy way to add personality and coziness to a nursery. I love the colors in this one! We also have a few faux sheepskin rugs in our nursery – they make for a nice spot to read on the floor and I love to drape them over our rocker in the cooler months.

Sound Machine: A sound machine is a MUST have! Start using it as early as possible as a part of bedtime routine. This one is so cute, or you can go with a classic version (we have this in our master bedroom).

Mobile:  A mobile hanging over the crib or changing area is a wonderful way to stimulate your baby — bonus if it plays music, too!

Diaper Pail: This is a top rated diaper pail and I’ll be purchasing it for baby #2 after going the cheaper route with Piper. I love the sleek design of the Ubbi and that you can use regular trash bags with it.

Storage Baskets: You can never have too many baskets in a nursery! We use them to hold blankets, toys and books. I also had one set up for breastfeeding while I was nursing and kept it near the rocker.

Baby Size Hangers: You won’t be able to utilize your closet unless you pick up the tiniest (i.e. most adorable) baby size hangers.

Monitor: Be sure to install and test your monitor before baby arrives – we love this version by Infant Optics which works for multiple rooms — you just need to add additional cameras which makes it a good option if you’re planning to have more than one child.

Humidifier: Instead of waiting until you need a humidifier have one ready to go when baby is born.

Side Table: I highly suggest having a small table next to your rocker for setting your water, snacks, book, phone, iPad etc. when feeding!

Laundry Hamper: I suggest finding one that fits in your closet or out of the way!
